I am proud to endorse Alex Johnson for the Los Angeles Unified School District Board.
Alex was born and raised in Los Angeles, and went through the Los Angeles public school system, graduating from LAUSD's Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES). His mother is a retired school teacher from LAUSD as well.
Alex has had an exceptional career: serving as an aide in Congress, working at the Public Defender's office in Washington DC, earning a substitute teacher’s license and teaching constitutional law to high school students, earning his Juris Doctor and serving as Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, New York. He came home to Los Angeles and now serves as the Assistant Senior Deputy for Education and Public Safety for my LA County Supervisor’s office in District 2.
I have had the chance to work with him for several years and be impressed with his expertise and work ethic.
I started my career as a public high school teacher. Education is an issue I care about deeply, which is why I hired Alex Johnson to be my senior advisor on education issues. Together we secured millions of dollars to provide access to preschools in South Los Angeles, launch the first-ever Children's Defense Fund Freedom School in a county youth probation camp and help hundreds of children learn to read in summer literacy programs. Alex has delivered results and improved the quality of life for children and families.
Severe disparities still exist in our public schools, not all of our children get the same opportunities to succeed. We've waited long enough for change, reforming our educational system is simply too important to delay. It's time for new leadership. This is why I endorse Alex Johnson for LA School Board.
