Betty Yee currently serves as one of five members on the California State Board of Equalization, the nation's only elected tax commission. She is the chosen Democratic candidate for State Controller in 2014, and I am proud to endorse Betty Yee's campaign for State Controller today.
Ms. Yee has both an inspirational story to tell, and an accomplished history that will make Betty Yee a great fit for this position. California's State Controller is the chief fiscal officer for our state, and makes sure our $100B state budget is spent properly, amongst other responsibilities.
She grew up in San Francisco, raised by Chinese immigrant parents who had founded and operated a laundry and dry cleaning business in San Francisco for 30 years. Ms. Yee learned English as a child outside of the home, and often worked at her parents' business serving as translator and also assisting in financial transactions.
Ms. Yee began her public service career as a county public health commissioner. She served as a Senate Fellow with the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, and held senior staff positions on several fiscal and policy committees in both houses of the California State Legislature. Betty then served as the Chief Deputy Director for Budget with the California Department of Finance. She was first elected to the State Board of Equalization in 2006, and re-elected in 2010 with 63% of the votes cast.
She has a deep earned knowledge of financial and budget issues, and the legislative process. That unique experience will help her do a great job serving the people of California. That's why I support Betty Yee as California's next State Controller.
