Yesterday I had the honor of speaking before the LAUSD Board to advocate for a right I thought we had earned some years ago, the right to vote.
I spoke about how my community while mourning the loss of its beloved leader, would never negotiate its right to self-determination. Never.
I spoke about civics, about the need for South LA to have an authentic voice and yes I spoke about paternalism.
I want to thank those that joined me, even those who spoke against. Civic engagement is key to our democracy.
I'll say it again : Civic Engagement is key to democracy.
While the Board voted to postpone their decision, this discussion is far from settled and we will certainly be saying more about it.
For now, I urge you to sign this petition at www.EmpowerSouthLA.com
Unlike other petitions, this doesn't sell your email address or spam you with fundraising appeals.
We need your civic engagement. This moment demands it. I have faith we will maintain our rights.
