MLK Community Hospital Trauma Center – Bringing Level 1 Emergency Care Back to Our Community

South Los Angeles residents and motorists traveling on the heavily traveled 105, 405 and 710 Freeways have been without an emergency medical care safety net provided by a Level 1 Trauma Center for the past decade. The Board of Supervisors closed King/Drew Medical Center’s trauma center in 2005 as the hospital struggled to retain its accreditation.

Mark Ridley-Thomas has asked the county Health Department study the steps that would be needed and funding that would be required to bring a Level 1 trauma center back to South L.A. where only 10-percent of the county’s population lives, but 20-percent of all county trauma-related deaths occur.
