This June election is critical for the future of Los Angeles County and for our state. Primaries don't get enough attention, I think – but the candidates who win in June will shape what our schools, our jails, and our community will be like.

I've written before about my support of Alex Johnson for Los Angeles Unified School District Board, Jeffrey Prang for Los Angeles County Assessor, and Hilda Solis for Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, District 1, as well as how important the Sheriff's race will be for Los Angeles.

I also wanted to mention my support of Autumn Burke for State Assembly. Autumn brings fresh ideas and a strong commitment to serving our community. She's a new generation of leadership rooted in helping others succeed. As an entrepreneur and small businesswoman, Autumn will use her strong work ethic and passion for problem solving to create opportunities for all Californians to succeed.

Any registered voter in California may vote using a vote-by-mail ballot instead of going to the polls on Election Day. The last day to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot for the June 3rd primary is May 27th. You can apply online here for a vote-by-mail ballot. In fact, some ballots are already in the mail this week. Note that you must be a registered voter already in order to apply to vote by mail. If you're not registered yet, you can register to vote online here. The last day to register to vote in time for this election is May 19th.

Given what the Supreme Court has done recently to take away our voting rights, it's more important than ever to take the time to exercise our right to vote. Read up on the candidates, educate yourself, and vote by mail now or in person June 3rd.
