Last week Rusty Hicks was voted in as the next Secretary-Treasurer of Los Angeles County's Federation of Labor, which represents 600,000 local workers. He will take office on January 1st next year, replacing Maria Elena Durazo. She is going on to fight for national immigration reform.
Rusty Hicks is an inspirational figure in the local labor movement. He is a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves, and served in Afghanistan in 2012-3. Rusty is currently the Political Director of the LA County Federation of Labor, where he ran their very effective get out the vote program.
Maria Elena has been a true leader and trailblazer in LA County: she turned a powerful labor union into a mighty labor movement. We worked together for more than 30 years, and I have much respect for all she has done for Los Angeles. I look forward to all she will now do nationally.
Labor will continue to have a bright future in Los Angeles, with Rusty at the helm. I can't wait to see what advances he will bring for working families in Southern California.
