Proud to join with my fellow LA County Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn to support Gavin Newsom to be California's next Governor!
Today I announce my endorsement of Gavin Newsom because he is a rather rare leader who not only can rally people behind a bold vision for change, but he also has the commitment and determination to see those changes through.
As Mayor of San Francisco, he brought the city together to pass the nation's first municipal universal health care plan, one that's now seen as a model across the nation. He was far ahead of the curve fighting homelessness and made real progress – moving 12,000 individuals off the street and commits to continuing the fight in Sacramento.
It is unconscionable that California – with the fifth-largest economy in the world – has over a hundred thousand men, women and children who are homeless and lack basic human services. He will do what it takes to restore dignity and well-being to those who have been caught in the vicious cycle of homelessness for far too long by leading the charge in Sacramento to have the State finally do its part.
Notably, Gavin has also been a courageous voice in the fight to end the war on drugs and inject fairness and rationality into a broken criminal justice system. He worked to help pass Proposition 47 in 2014, which made nonviolent offenses like drug and property crimes misdemeanors instead of felonies. He knows there is unfinished business, and he is prepared to do it as California's leader.
Gavin has stuck his neck out for all of our communities, and he has set an example for other municipal leaders throughout the state. The residents of Los Angeles County would be well served with him in the Governor's Office.
