Karen Bass is a longtime friend and ally, and supporter of our community. I am proud to endorse her re-election campaign to U.S. Congress.
Karen has proven her worth as a public servant time and again with her willingness and desire to listen carefully to the people she serves, coupled with her ability to act swiftly, forcefully and sensitively to meet the needs of all her diverse constituents.
Our lives have often run on parallel tracks. Inspired by watching the Civil Rights movement with her father, she committed to community activism as a child. In 1990 she started and ran the Community Coalition, another community-based social justice organization in South Los Angeles. In 2004, she also was elected to the State Assembly. Karen went on to blaze new trails and make history as the 67th Speaker of the California Assembly, and the first African American woman to hold this post.
Karen was first elected to Congress in 2010, and continues to ably serve our community there. She takes on issues of substance, working on criminal justice reform and reforming America’s foster care system. She also serves on the Steering and Policy Committee, which sets the policy direction of the Democratic Caucus, and serves as 2nd Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. She is a proven leader, and I am honored to support her re-election.
