Along with my colleagues Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis, I’m pleased to endorse Congresswoman Nanette Barragán for the general election to U.S. Congress, District 44. Mayor Aja Brown will also be appearing on the ballot, but she has withdrawn from running.
Nanette Diaz Barragán has served the 44th district honorably, and we must re-elect her this November. Since November 2016, the Trump administration has shown there are no depths they will not sink to. We need strong progressive fighters in Congress to hold Trump accountable. Nanette will be that leader for us.
She has spent her career working to empower the people who need a voice the most. Nanette has demonstrated again and again her commitment to social justice and equality through her pro-bono work for immigrants, her voter protection work for President Obama, her work at the NAACP and now her legislative agenda in Congress.
She is a trailblazer. Barragán was the first Latina elected to the Hermosa Beach City Council, and she was the only new Democratic Latina elected to the U.S. House in 2016. In her words at the 25th Annual Empowerment Congress Summit: “Don’t be afraid, be empowered.”
Nanette stands for working people. She will push for an increase in the minimum wage, equal pay for women, and for paid leave so that working people are not forced to choose between their families and their jobs. She will stand against the Trump administration cuts to low-income communities, communities of color, and affordable housing, and for projects like the new apartment complex in Carson for veterans.
She is going to continue to tackle the tough problems we face including homelessness, affordable housing, and health care for all. I am proud to stand with Congresswoman Barragán, who will stand up to Trump and for the people of California.
